Heavy rains threaten Lynchburg dam in Virginia – Daily Mail

A deluge of rain in Virginia has prompted hundreds of people living below an overflowing dam to be evacuated from their homes. The National Weather Service said up to six inches (15 centimeters) of rain fell within hours Thursday, filling a dam at College Lake, near Lynchburg, Virgnia, beyond capacity. Because of the torrential rainfall, residents of the city’s threatened areas were evacuated to a local school, which was converted into a shelter, during a two hour period Thursday beginning at 8pm, the News & Advance reported. WDBJ reported that crews worked to evacuate 124 residences — in the city of 80,000 — on several roads near the dam.
