Runner pops the question before completing the Great North Run

Stephen Baker, 22, achieved the perfect finish for this year’s Great North Run when he hopped over the barrier on the final straight in South Shields after running 12 miles so he could ask Jennie Abbott to marry him. An exhausted Mr Barker was applauded by friends and family on Sunday as he took a deep breath before popping the question to Ms Abbott – the mother of his seven-month-old son Leo. Mr Baker, a factory worker from Blakelaw, Newcastle, was handed the ring by a friend of Ms Abbott and fell into his fiancée’s arms after she said yes.
